With over 5,100 members, the Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) provides dynamic leadership, education, and advocacy for DermPAs™ nationwide. Our committee volunteers are the backbone of the organization, servant leaders helping to shape the future of the DermPA™ profession while driving meaningful work that supports our members every day.

FAQs
When does the Call for Volunteers take place?
Typically, in May each year. All SDPA members are notified via email once applications are open.
How do I apply?
During the application window, members complete a short Call for Volunteers survey indicating their interest. The survey remains open for several weeks, and selections are made in June. The new term begins July 1.
What is the time commitment for serving on a committee?
Most committees require 3-5 hours per quarter. This includes quarterly virtual meetings (additional, as required) and occasional offline contributions (e.g., reviewing documents or sharing feedback). Our SDPA staff supports each committee to ensure a manageable workload for all volunteers.
Who selects Committee Chairs?
Chairs are appointed annually by the incoming SDPA President.
How long do I have to be a member before applying?
We welcome all SDPA members to volunteer. Whether you are brand new or have been with SDPA for 30 years. We welcome you.

CME Conference Committee
This committee plays a strategic role in shaping the programming for the Summer and Fall Conferences by ensuring high-quality, relevant, and engaging educational content. By executing their responsibilities, the committee enhances the overall conference experience, drives attendee value, and reinforces the organization's reputation for delivering high-caliber medical education.
Frequency of meetings: Quarterly
Main assignments:
- Review evaluation data to plan the SDPA Summer Conference.
- Review evaluation data to plan the SDPA Fall Conference.
- Grade abstracts.
Communications Committee
Members of the Communication Committee play a key role in shaping forward-thinking strategies that increase visibility and engagement across SDPA’s diverse audiences—including members, the public, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. The committee helps guide and contribute to content development, ensuring alignment with SDPA’s voice and goals.
Frequency of meetings: Quarterly, additional as needed
Main assignments:
- Develop content strategy to drive engagement across social media platforms.
- Explore Dermcast/podcast topics and guests to maximize audience growth and reach.
- Expand visibility and content of SDPA’s blog.
Diplomate Fellowship Advisory Panel
The Diplomate Fellowship Advisory Panel provides strategic guidance and oversight for the Diplomate Fellowship program, ensuring it remains a prestigious and rigorous pathway for advanced professional development. This panel plays a critical role in shaping the program’s curriculum, maintaining high standards of excellence, and enhancing its value for participants and the broader medical community. Through its leadership, the Advisory Panel upholds the integrity and prestige of the Diplomate Fellowship, ensuring it remains a benchmark for excellence in advanced medical education and professional achievement.

- Review evaluation data from Diplomate program users.
- Respond to content related questions from the Diplomate program.
- Assess Diplomate Modules for corrections, updates, etc.
Distance Medical Education Committee
he Distance Medical Education Committee is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality medical education through innovative virtual learning opportunities. This committee plays a strategic role in developing, curating, and optimizing online educational programs that support the professional growth of medical professionals. The committee strengthens the organization's digital education portfolio, ensuring that members have access to cutting-edge medical knowledge anytime, anywhere.

Main assignments:
- Review evaluation data to plan relevant webinars and eLearning programs.
- Secure SMEs for webinars and eLearning programs.
- Examine current programming for relevancy, repeat uses, etc.
Dermatology PA Foundation (DPAF)
The Dermatology PA Foundation (DPAF) is the charitable arm of the SDPA, dedicated to making a lasting impact providing scholarships, research grants, and public awareness campaigns. DPAF is led by a Board of Trustees appointed by the SDPA Board of Directors.
Frequency of meetings: Quarterly
Main assignments:
- Review applications and select recipients for scholarships and medical missions.
- Manage free skin checks at conferences.
- Develop programs to support DermPAs and to educate the public about skin health.
Early Career DermPA™ Committee
The Early Career DermPA Committee enhances the organization's engagement with and support of DermPAs who are within the first five years of their career in the specialty. The committee explores avenues to grow and retain early career SDPA members, while enhancing the professional development and learning programs available to them. The committee also considers SDPA conferences, ensuring early career DermPAs have access to valuable networking and growth opportunities.
Frequency of meetings: Quarterly
Main assignments:
- Review Emerging Scholar applications and recommend final slate to the board for approval.
- Consider and match applications for the mentor-mentee program.
- Create a DermPA Pathway documentation for early career DermPAs.
Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee
The Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee provides the Society clinical perspectives on public policy developments impacting SDPA members, dermatology professionals, patients, and the skin health of the general public. The committee helps build an annual advocacy agenda, narrowing key areas of advocacy focus and advising on the position of SDPA on important issues. The committee frequently engages on state level policy and serve as Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) for grassroots efforts advocating for the DermPA profession and patients they serve.

- Share state updates on access issues.
- Engage in speaking roles for internal and external advocacy events.
- Represent SDPA and promote advocacy initiatives on behalf of its members.
IDEA Committee (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access)

The IDEA Committee is committed to building a stronger, more inclusive dermatology PA community by promoting the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access across all areas of our organization. By pursuing these goals, the SDPA aims to broaden diversity within our membership, leadership, and educational programs, fostering meaningful change and advancing equitable healthcare practices for all.
Frequency of Meetings: Quarterly
Main assignments:
- Increase diversity and inclusion within SDPA’s membership, leadership, and volunteer base.
- Promote diversity through speakers and educational resources sourced and provided by SDPA.
- Solicit manuscripts on DEI-related dermatology topics to be included in JDPA or as a supplement to JDPA.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee evaluates and advises on the needs of SDPA members through surveys, data insights and analytics, and their own perspective as SDPA members and dermatology professionals. The committee shepherds the development of member programs and benefits and ensures the ongoing growth of the SDPA membership. The Membership Committee oversees the Annual SDPA Awards process.
