Course Description:

Join us for an engaging journal club webinar titled "Hot Topics in Therapeutics: Oral Minoxidil, GLP-1 Inhibitors, and Drug-Resistant Tinea," where three expert faculty members will explore recent literature from the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) related to dermatological therapeutics. Each speaker will present their findings on a specific topic, facilitating an interactive discussion to enhance understanding of these critical advancements. This session is tailored for dermatology PAs eager to deepen their knowledge and integrate the latest evidence-based practices into their patient care. Links to all journal articles will be available upon registration.
 

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn more on the topic of:

  • Oral Minoxidil: Assess the application of oral minoxidil in dermatology for treating alopecia, focusing on the practical considerations for prescribing, monitoring patient responses, and managing potential side effects in diverse patient populations.
  • GLP-1 Inhibitors: Explore the integration of GLP-1 inhibitors in dermatological practice, particularly their impact on skin health and weight management in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes, and discuss strategies for patient counseling and follow-up.
  • Drug-Resistant Tinea: Identify the current challenges posed by drug-resistant tinea infections in dermatology, and review the latest evidence-based treatment options and guidelines to effectively manage these cases and improve patient outcomes.
  • Enhancement of their understanding of recent advancements in dermatological therapeutics, equipping dermatology PAs with the knowledge and skills to effectively incorporate new treatment modalities into their practice for improved patient care and outcomes.

Speaker Bios

Cynthia Griffith is a Dermatology Physician Assistant at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Cynthia is the Editor in chief for the Journal of Dermatology Physician Assistants and is a guest lecturer in the UT Southwestern PA program and a lecturer at local, regional and national conferences. When not practicing, Cynthia is a national champion sailor and marathoner.

Elenitsa Sebat is a seasoned Dermatology Physician Assistant PA-C with a career spanning over a decade in Northern California. Since 2009, she has been a devoted practitioner, in rural and urban healthcare communities. She has been an active member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants since 2010. Her passion for reducing healthcare disparities led her to pursue a PhD program focusing on understanding and addressing melanoma skin cancer disparities, reflecting her dedication to improving healthcare access and outcomes for all populations.

In addition to her clinical endeavors, Elenitsa is deeply invested in education. Joining the faculty at UC Davis in April 2021, she has been instrumental in teaching future healthcare professionals in the Physician Assistant program. Elenitsa finds balance outside her professional life by sharing cherished moments skiing with her kids and partner during winter and exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Northern California through hiking during the summer.

Peter Young

Peter Young practices medical and surgical dermatology in Northern California, at Kaiser Permanente and Stanford University. His research has appeared in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology, Journal of Dermatology for PAs, The Dermatologist, and elsewhere. Peter was named SDPA’s Derm PA of the Year in 2022, for contributions to the dermatologic literature and mentorship of fellow clinicians in the art of medical writing.
