SDPA Fall 2017 | Important Update | Conference Cancelled

As you know, Puerto Rico has recently suffered from both hurricanes Irma and Maria within the past month. Although our conference hotels, the Caribe Hilton and Condado Plaza Hilton, both reported minimal damage after Hurricane Irma, they weren’t as fortunate during the direct blow that category 4 Hurricane Maria delivered to the island. Hurricane Maria has left a tremendous amount of devastation in its wake, which you have likely seen in the news reports depicting the massive power outages, property destruction and, unfortunately, loss of life.

Our hearts go out to the people of Puerto Rico, as well as all of those in the Caribbean who suffered tremendous damage from these powerful storms. For several years the SDPA has been excitedly planning our first ever destination conference to this beautiful island. Everyone we have worked with, from the hotel staff to the various vendors, have been welcoming and gracious. They, along with all the people of Puerto Rico, are in our thoughts and prayers as they begin this long road to recovery.

It is with great disappointment and heavy hearts that the SDPA Board of Directors, in coordination with our Conference CME Committee, has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Fall Dermatology Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The hotels suffered considerable damage and are currently not even taking reservations before October 31; there is no guarantee that they will be able to get up and running in the next 6 weeks. Our short timeframe, combined with the amount of clean-up needed and the resources still required to help the people of Puerto Rico, does not provide us with enough confidence to know that we will be able to hold our conference. Our focus remains keeping our attendees, their families, faculty, partners, and staff safe and comfortable.

We know many of you, like us, have been planning this trip to Puerto Rico for some time and quite possibly had planned to extend your trips to enjoy the sights of the island. We are just as disappointed as you are, but please know this decision did not come easily, and SDPA leaders and staff have been working tirelessly to make an informed decision with your safety and well-being in mind.

CME Options:
In addition to our conferences, we’d like to remind you that the SDPA offers other CME opportunities. Please visit our Online Learning Center to purchase video packages from our Las Vegas conference last fall. In addition, recorded sessions from this year’s summer conference in San Diego will be available soon.

We thank you again for your continued patience as we’ve waited for information to make this decision. Providing quality CME opportunities to the dermatology PA community is one of our primary goals and we appreciate your continued support. Please plan to join us next June in Seattle, Washington for the SDPA Annual Summer Dermatology Conference or in Orlando, Florida, for the SDPA’s 16th Annual Fall Dermatology Conference in November 2018 (more information to come soon).

Does hotel automatically refund us or do we need to request? As far as the SDPA do you also automatically refund to card used?
