SDPA Federal Priorities

Alopecia Areata & Vitiligo Coverage:

  • Support federal policy requiring coverage of FDA-approved treatments and opposing classification of these conditions as cosmetic within Medicare and Medicaid programs.

PA Student Loan “Professional Degree” Reclassification

  • Support federal efforts to reclassify MPAS programs as “professional degree” programs, ensuring federal loan and repayment regulations better reflect the advanced training, clinical expertise, and strong career outlook associated with an MPAS degree—especially given the country’s healthcare workforce shortages.

CMS Medicare & Medicaid Reimbursement Stability:

  • Support sustainable reimbursement and oppose payment cuts that threaten patient access to dermatologic care.

Utilization Management & Copay Reform:

  • Support policies that streamline prior authorization and step therapy and ensure copays count toward total cost-sharing obligations, enabling patients to access the care they need.

Telehealth Access & Reimbursement:

  • Support permanent expansion of telehealth access and equitable reimbursement.

Drug Pricing Affordability and Transparency:

  • Support policies that preserve innovation while meaningfully reducing patient out-of-pocket costs through reforms such as de-linking pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) compensation from drug pricing and preventing unintended consequences in the 340B program that could negatively impact dermatological practice.

Healthcare Workforce Mobility / Non-Compete Reform

  • Support limits on restrictive non-compete agreements to protect workforce mobility and patient access to care.

Skin Health Research, Workforce & Innovation Funding:

  • Support increased federal investment in dermatologic research, workforce development – including increased diversity and representation in the field –, and emerging technologies.

Counterfeit/ Non-Equivalent Biologics & Drug Supply Integrity:

  • Continue advocacy and education addressing counterfeit or non-equivalent biologics, cosmetics, and other drugs entering the pharmaceutical supply chain.
