Special Task Forces

When necessary the SDPA board of directors will appoint special task force(s) to focus on advancing a topic of importance to the dermatology PA community. Below is information on active task forces and their goals.

PA's in Puerto Rico Task Force

The SDPA has teamed up with the AAPA and the PAs for the Latino Health Caucus to target legislation for PAs to serving patients in the US territory of Puerto Rico. Our 2017 SDPA CME conference is scheduled to be held November 4-12, 2017 in San Juan, Puerto Rico at the Caribe Hilton hotel.

Being the first PA organization to hold a CME meeting there the SDPA hopes to build on the many legislative successes of our organization. We, along with the AAPA, look to use the conference as an opportunity to reach out to the local medical community and demonstrate how PAs learn and practice.

SDPA and AAPA have held a conference call to bring us up-to-date about PAs in Puerto Rico, efforts to pass a PA practice act in the Commonwealth and to discuss PA advocacy opportunities surrounding the SDPA conference. Being the first PA specialty organization to visit with Congress on Capitol Hill, the SDPA brings a unique perspective and useful insight to the process.

SDPA is also looking to perform a service project in conjunction with this meeting to bring further attention to all the benefits we can bring to a community.

Task Force on Corporate Buyouts of Dermatology Practices

The SDPA, seeing a growing trend of larger corporate buyouts of small private dermatology practices, formed the Corporate Buyouts of Dermatology Practices Task Force. This task force specifically focuses on identifying need to know details within this growing trend and communicating that information to SDPA members. The task force is still looking for supporting volunteer members or any members who work within a practice recently bought out by a corporate entity.

Task Force on Full Practice Authority and Responsibility

In response to the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) recent steps to consider changes in policy to allow PAs to gain full practice authority the SDPA formed its own Task Force on Full Practice Authority. The SDPA believes that PAs demonstrate a mastery of both skill proficiency and medical knowledge that negates the need for individual PAs to have their licenses subjugated to that of another member of the healthcare team. We assert that individual PAs recognize the limits of their knowledge and skills, and will consult appropriate members of the healthcare team in order to obtain optimal patient outcomes. Both the SDPA and the AAPA remain committed to team-based medical care.
