The 2017 AAD Annual meeting took place from March 3-7 2017 in Orlando, Florida. The SDPA was represented at this meeting by several leaders and staff. Our leadership team met with representatives from the AAD to discuss the AAPA’s Full Practice Authority and Responsibility (FPAR) proposal and the AAD’s DermCare Team. During the meeting, we were able to clarify some points that were concerning to AAD members and relay our continued commitment to team-based care with physicians, as well as our suggestion to the AAPA to edit the title of the proposal to be less controversial amongst the dermatologist community and more accurately reflect our intentions. We encourage all SDPA members to become familiar with the FPAR proposal to be prepared to discuss any concerns your collaborating physician may have. The SDPA will continue to work closely with AAPA on this issue and maintaining our relationship with dermatologists.

The SDPA was also represented, for the 16th year, in the AAD exhibit hall by our Public Education Committee. Those staffing the booth worked hard to educate physicians on the benefits of adding a PA to their practice, answered questions about how PAs are utilized, and how to find and retain a PA. We encouraged PAs to join the SDPA or maintain their membership and provided information for our upcoming conferences. There was increasing interest in the opportunity for PAs to work internationally, and we were even fortunate enough to meet a PA from Holland who is one of about 20 dermatology PAs in that country. Our Industry Relations team continued dialogue with various sponsors to continue support for our meetings and educational programs.

Overall, it was a productive and busy meeting for all in attendance. We are honored to have the opportunity to represent and advocate for you, our members, year after year. Big thanks to SDPA leaders Jennifer Winter, Vicki Roberts, Robert Higham, Joleen Volz, Jane Mast, and staff Leah Reily and Chad Quinn for their hard work and dedication to making this another successful meeting.
