Dear Colleagues -

In just 4 weeks, our lives have changed drastically, and we find ourselves in a global crisis fighting a pandemic. Personally, I’m choosing to fight with the belief that a crisis can often result in an opportunity to appreciate unanticipated gifts. I wanted to share with you the ‘gifts’ I have identified during this crisis to date.

The first gift is family.  I have been able to spend precious time with my family on walks around the neighborhood, playing board games, and – yes - even helping my 4th and 6th graders with their homework and classroom work.

Next, I was very worried I would not have time to complete the required 100 hours of CME for my NCCPA certification cycle due to my added responsibilities as SDPA president this past year.  With decreased hours in the office, I have been able to complete and participate in online CME activities and journals, resulting in finishing my CME requirements one month before my deadline.

From the standpoint of our chosen profession, I have witnessed large strides in PA legislative advancements.  Seven states including New York have suspended and lifted the existing supervision and practice requirements for PAS.  This is changing information and you could view an updated list of where your state falls on this AAPA link . My home state of Florida has had over 15,000 signatures on a petition to suspend the existing supervision and practice requirements for PAs allowing them to provide medical care during this pandemic.

The SDPA acknowledges the difficult times facing so many of our members. We are offering the Orlando Recordings FREE to all members in an effort to provide CME to those in need who have been furloughed, laid off, or unable to attend a medical conference within these past 2 months. We have also developed a series of Empowering the Derm PA webinars that are free to the SDPA membership.  If you’ve had the opportunity to attend one of these sessions live, I hope you found it valuable. And if you haven’t had the chance to attend, we are making each of these webinars, as well as the complimentary CME recordings, available to you in the SDPA Learning Center. Additionally, the SDPA created a COVID-19 resource page with answers and links to telemedicine questions, financial questions, and other important COVID-19 facts.

The last gift I’ve recognized is the power of human interaction. I recently attended a “live” webinar conference. Yes, I appreciated the educational information gained, but oh how I missed the networking and dialogue I would have had with a live “in person” conference.  With that said, I am very excited for the SDPA fall conference in Miami, and I look forward to seeing you there.

In closing, the gifts I have received with this crisis include increased family time, completing CME requirements, progressive PA legislation, SDPA providing free CME and COVID-19 resources to our membership, and the importance of human interaction.  I have always said we as individuals grow from our mistakes and challenges.  I am using this crisis to grow and better my family, my profession, and my career.

I wish everyone good health and wellness.

Sincerely,

Gina D. Mangin, MPAS, PA-C
SDPA President
