Dear Colleagues -

February is known as the month to celebrate love and friendship.  In that spirit, I’d like to share with you the things I love about being a dermatology PA.  During our  hectic days of seeing 30-50 patients a day, we can sometimes forget about the reasons we are dermatology PAs, and it’s important to remind ourselves why we love what we do!

  1. I love when I can give a teenager her confidence back after clearing her acne.
  2. I love when I can give a psoriasis patient the ability to wear black again or, better yet, wear shorts again in Florida.
  3. I love when I can allow parents to sleep through the night because their child is no longer waking them up in the middle of the night with eczema itching.
  4. I love that I can diagnose a skin cancer early enough so that a patient only needs a small excision or, better yet, only an ED&C.
  5. I love that I can put a patient’s anxiety at ease and reassure he/she that their seborrheic keratosis is not a skin cancer.
  6. I love that I can easily diagnose tinea by performing a simple KOH in my office.
  7. I love that I was able to diagnose a patient's pemphigus foliaceus early enough before he began the wrong treatments.
  8. I love that I was able to have a patient with significant alopecia grow his hair back so that he longer has to wear hats to cover up his “bald” patches.
  9. I love that I was able to have a vitiligo patient develop re-pigmentation and become less self-conscious about her skin.
  10. I love the team approach with taking care of patients and being surrounded by nurses, physicians, and fellow PAs, all of whom want to provide exceptional patient care.

These are only some of the reasons that I love being a dermatology PA.  What are yours?  I would love to see you share your love for being a dermatology PA on our SDPA Connect site, and on our social media feeds.  Let’s share some Derm PA LOVE with each other this February!  #DermPAlove
