April 2015 meeting

Posted By SCSDPA, Saturday, April 11, 2015
Updated: Monday, July 25, 2016

Today marks the 2015/2016 term for our organization! I want to start by acknowledging the new officers for this term.

  • President: Heather Wolf
  • President Elect: Chris Thompson
  • Director at Large: Michael Overcash
  • Vice President: Becky Fuhr
  • Treasurer: Melissa Loeffler
  • Secretary: Kalen Ashford
  • Student Liaison: May Redderson
  • Membership and Communications: Holly Carter
  • Representatives:
    • Lowcountry: Heather Wolf
    • Midlands: Ben Addy
    • Upstate: Chris Thompson

Congratulations to all and thank you to the officers of 2014/2015 for your hard work and dedication to improving SCSDPA.

SCSDPA Accomplishments of 2014/2015

  • We are now a CME category 1 provider! Lookout for programs coming in the 2015/2016 year.
  • We currently have 5 SDPA Diplomats! A diplomat is currently the highest achievement nationwide for the dermatology PA community.  Our goal is to help every dermatology PA in South Carolina achieve this status.
    • Congratulations to the following Diplomats:
      • April McNeil
      • Michael Overcash
      • Edward Reynolds
      • Vicki Roberts
      • Heather Wolf
  • Letters to Hutcheson
    • In the 2015-2016 term, we led improved communication between the SCSDPA and SCDA leadership, and were able to clear up some misunderstanding about PAs vs MAs, and delegation of responsibilities to non-physician providers.  This led to a retraction letter and the new PA scope of practice being sent from current SCDA president Dr. Hutcheson, to all SCDA members.  This represents the majority of dermatologists in our state.  Also, for the first time in 4 years, no inaccurate or slanderous statements were made about PAs, during the SCDA business meeting.

Don’t forget to pay your dues! Only $20 for membership ($10 for students).

A big thank you to Innocutis for hosting SCSDPA at Peninsula Grill and discussing the newest development for recurrent herpes labialis.

Tis the season…

Posted By SCSDPA, Wednesday, December 1, 2010
Updated: Monday, August 29, 2016

This is the time of year that typically brings the best out of everyone.Am s physician assistants, we are lucky enough to help people on a day to day basis.  But this time of year, most of us want to do even more. Founding member, Michael Overcash, has been volunteering at theDream Center Clinic in North Charleston for the past two years. He wanted to share some information regarding his experience working there. He has been able to see uninsured, low-income,dermatology patients. The clinic has fully supported him with nurses, transcriptionists, and surgical techs. Most labs, prescriptions, and pathologies are free thanks to Labcorp, WellVista, and DermPath .

If you are interested in volunteering your time and expertise, please contact Michael Overcash (
Here is a medical volunteer application for the clinic. Here is an application for a non-medical volunteer.

If anyone knows of any other great opportunities such as these, just send them to the SCSDPA at so we can post them on the site.

Thanks and have a great holiday season!!

Dermatology for the Non-Dermatologist

Posted By SCSDPA, Friday, October 1, 2010
Updated: Monday, August 29, 2016

In August, the midland SCSDPA group were able to listen to speaker Dr. Neil Fenske of the University of South Florida.  During the dinner he mentioned that he is the course director for the Annual Dermatology for the Non-Dermatologist that they hold in Key West, FL every year.

From what I gather, it seems like it would be a great conference for the new PAs or new to derm PAs because it concentrates on the basics for dermatology such as cryosurgery, biopsies, etc.  Next year is going to be its 12th year.  Faculty all teach the lectures and there is no funding from pharmaceutical companies at all, in other words, no bias.  If you know of anyone that you think might benefit from this please, please pass on the website:

Save the Date!

Posted By SCSDPA, Thursday, September 30, 2010
Updated: Monday, August 29, 2016

The South Carolina Dermatology Association (SCDA) have scheduled their annual meeting for April 8-9, 2011 at the Doubtletree hotel in Charleston, SC.

For those of you who have not attended this meeting in the past, it is worth attending.  It is a short and sweet conference with practical information.  It is also a great place to meet other dermatology PAs in the state.

The Friday night of the meeting will also serve as the SCSDPA’s annual meeting and elections.  Russ Cason with Galderma has already offered to sponsor our dinner meeting for that night.

New Forum Topics

Posted By SCSDPA, Tuesday, September 28, 2010
Updated: Monday, August 29, 2016

Along with General Discussion, our forum now has two new topics:

  • Physician Assistants in the News
  • Dermatology in the News

This is a great way to keep up-to-date on various news stories (accurate or not) about our profession and specialty.  How many times has a patient come to us with something they heard about in the news?  By having this forum, we can try to stay current on what is being reported.

If you feel strongly, about something in the news posted on our forum, write about it!

If you see a news story not listed in the forum, add it!
